A History of Asbestos

An asbestos roof can be a major health risk or even deadly.
You see, fibro cement roof sheeting contains around 5 – 10% chrysotile (white asbestos), which is enough to present a health risk if the material is mishandled.

The reason handling asbestos is a health risk is because if the tiny hook-shaped asbestos fibres are stirred up, they are released into the air, where they can be breathed in. If one or more of the particle hooks lodges in the wall of a lung, mesothelioma (or “asbestosis”) will develop. This takes, typically, 15 – 25 years to fully develop, but when it does… it’s fatal.

Popular opinion is that asbestos fibres are only stirred up from breaking or cutting the material. While this is true it fails to point out how easily asbestos sheets can break when being handled. Even gentle handling can be enough to put microscopic fibres into the air – fibres that you then breathe in.

This is why you should always engage a professional (who is fully licensed in asbestos removal) for any work at your home involving this potentially deadly material. At Asbestos Re Roofers, we take all of the necessary safety precautions and exceed ‘Workplace Health and Safety’ regulations. See the page titled ‘Roof Removal Process’ to see how thorough we are with this most important aspect of asbestos roof removal.
